Every roofing manufacturer will tell you their product is 'engineered for Canadian winters.' Most are, on paper. In reality, some materials perform dramatically better than others once you factor in snow load, ice damming, freeze-thaw cycles, and the reality of installation in a climate where you can't always wait for perfect weather.
1. Standing-seam steel
The gold standard for cold climates. Snow slides off (as long as you plan for where it lands), no granules to lose, no ice-dam vulnerability, 50+ year lifespan. Downsides: cost (2–2.5× architectural asphalt), noise during heavy rain (mitigated by proper underlayment), and specialized installation.
2. Premium impact-rated architectural asphalt
The best value in the category. Modern 50-year rated shingles (IKO Nordic, GAF Timberline HDZ, Owens Corning Duration) hold up better than anything in the 25-year category. Real-world life in the north: 30–40 years with proper ventilation.
3. Interlocking metal tile
Interlocking aluminum or steel tile systems (like Metalworks Country Manor) offer standing-seam durability in a more traditional aesthetic. Costs sit between architectural asphalt and standing-seam. Excellent option for homes where standing-seam looks too industrial.
Whatever material you pick, the underlayment and ice-and-water shield matter more than the shingle brand. A cheap shingle over a proper ice-and-water shield outperforms a premium shingle over 15-lb felt every time.
4. Cedar shakes
Beautiful on the right building, but demanding. Needs full breathing on both sides, treatment against fire and rot, and periodic maintenance. Best on high-end custom homes where the aesthetic justifies the ongoing attention.
5. Standard 3-tab asphalt
Avoid in this climate. Real-world life of 12–17 years, poor performance under snow load, and prone to lift in high winds. The upfront savings vs. architectural (~15%) don't come close to compensating for the shorter life.
Beware anyone offering to install a new roof on top of an existing one to save you money. It void manufacturer warranties, hides deck problems, adds weight the structure wasn't designed for, and dramatically shortens the new roof's life.
