Vinyl vs. Wood Siding: Honest Trade-offs

One is cheaper. One is prettier. Neither is wrong. Here's how to decide.

The vinyl-vs-wood debate is emotional for a lot of homeowners. It shouldn't be. They're both legitimate materials with different trade-offs — the right answer depends entirely on your house, your budget, and how long you plan to stay.

The honest case for vinyl

Modern vinyl siding (post-2015) looks dramatically better than it used to. Architectural profiles mimic real board reveals, and colour technology holds up 30+ years without fading. It's zero maintenance, competitive on insulation, and costs 40–60% less installed than cedar.

The honest case for wood

Real cedar has a warmth, dimensionality, and patina that vinyl cannot replicate. On the right house — a lakeside cottage, a modern cabin, anything where the exterior is part of the design statement — cedar is worth the premium. Full stop.

If you'd like the look of wood without the maintenance, engineered wood siding (LP SmartSide) sits between the two: real wood aesthetic, factory-primed, 15-year finish warranty, roughly 30% less than cedar installed.

The maintenance reality

Cedar needs restaining every 3–5 years. Factor in $2,500–$5,000 per cycle. Over 30 years of siding life, that's $20,000+ in maintenance you don't pay on vinyl. That doesn't make cedar wrong — but it does make the true cost comparison different than the sticker price suggests.

Do not install cedar siding without a proper rain-screen assembly. Cedar needs to breathe on both sides. Cedar directly on tarpaper will rot from the back within 8–12 years.

Our recommendation

For most homes: modern architectural vinyl. For statement homes where the exterior matters aesthetically: cedar, properly installed on a rain-screen. Both are correct decisions — the wrong decision is either at the wrong price or the wrong installation.
